Don’t get Scrooged by scammers this holiday season

December 07, 2016   By Susan Mungo in Customer Care

Don’t let a scamming Scrooge get your hard-earned money.

The most wonderful time of the year is now in full swing. People enjoy a spirit of giving that can make peace on earth seem like an attainable goal. There is, however, still the ever-present Scrooge that seems to show up just when you think there is a chance for real goodwill toward men.

Many utility customers are finding that a particular irritating version of Scrooge rears its ugly head in the form of a scam call demanding payment of your electric bill. Very savvy fraudsters can convince you that they are Santee Cooper and that you have to pay your bill immediately, often with a special prepaid card or else your power will be turned off.

If you are a residential customer, we want you to be diligent about verifying anyone trying to get money or personal information from you. And while these scammers do call homeowners, this type of scam typically targets businesses who cannot afford to lose power because of lost revenue. In the moment of frustration,... Don’t fall for fraud calls

September 28, 2016   By Jessica Yourko in Customer Care

If you happen to receive a call and feel pressured, hang up and call one of our Customer Care representatives at 1-800-804-7424.

Does your phone ring day and night with numbers you don’t recognize? Mine does!

I will go ahead and admit it: I am a serial phone number screener. If I don’t recognize your number or if I am busy working, I am going to let the call go to voice mail.

Nine times out of 10, the caller doesn’t leave a message and when I do a quick Google search of the number, it indicates that the scammers are hard at work.

What are they looking for? Usually it’s money or some other personal identifying information they can use for financial gain.

Don’t fall for this scam

Recently, some of our customers have narrowly missed becoming victims to these types of predators.

Customers have received calls where the caller states they are with Santee Cooper and if a certain dollar amount is not paid within an hour, the recipient’s power will be interrupted. While some say the call sounds... Continue Reading >>

Get social with us

February 24, 2016   By Nicole Aiello in Customer Care
I have a long history of loving to read. I especially enjoy the smell of ink and the tactile feel of pages between my fingertips. So, it's a bit surprising to me that I now regularly turn to the screen instead of the paper for the written word – local news, weather updates, national headlines, celebrity gossip, world events and everything in between.

It surprises me even more that I'm getting probably more than 80 percent of my daily intake of information in bite-sized, social media chunks. However, I know there's a reason for that: With social media, I can get immediate, up-to-the-second information and news. And although I still appreciate stories in ink, it's much harder to stay completely up to date by referencing only in print. I have a feeling most of you who are reading this blog on your smart phones or computer screens are right there with me, and doing things like checking Twitter for traffic jams or Facebook for company news.

Because of... Continue Reading >>

More than milk and bread

January 27, 2016   By Jessica Yourko in Customer Care

Recent winters have brought severe winter weather to South Carolina, and it's just as important to plan for these events as you would for a hurricane. (Photo by Jim Huff)

Last Saturday morning, I awoke to Winter Storm Jonas: a dreary sky, some pretty cold temperatures and a light dusting of snow on my back deck. By 10 a.m., it was all gone and our life was back to normal. Further up the East Coast, our neighbors to the north weren't quite as lucky.

While we don't typically see this type of winter weather, you just never know when our luck may run out.

Severe winter weather usually comes with strong winds, freezing rain, and dangerously low temperatures. It is critical to be prepared and have a plan before a storm like this strikes.

Are you ready? What would you do? Keep these tips in mind when preparing for winter weather:

Prepare an emergency kit to include a 3-day supply of water and food for each person Assemble a First Aid kit Gather all medications (at least a 7-day supply) Check/charge flashlight and radio batteries Charge all mobile devices Have extra... Continue Reading >>

Paying your bills is now a one-stop shop

January 20, 2016   By Susan Mungo in Customer Care
I love things that make life more convenient, like paying my bills online or through automatic draft. I especially love the convenience of being able to accomplish many things with a single stop. You know what I mean: the whole "one-stop shop" concept.

At Santee Cooper, we are trying to make life more of a one-stop shop for our customers. We've added a new method to our list of easy and convenient ways to pay . Now any Western Union Agent location in the United States will take your Santee Cooper payment. That adds over 1,300 bill-pay locations in South Carolina alone. Wow.

What's better is many of these WU Agent locations are inside stores where you shop for other things: places like Walgreens, Bi-Lo, Food Lion, Piggly Wiggly, Rite Aid and a host of others.

If you want to find the closest place to make your payment, you can use the easy Western Union locator link. All locations take cash payments, and certain locations accept... Continue Reading >>
