Transfer Instructions

Mini-Bond registrations can be transferred to different ownerships with the proper documentation.The most common types of transfers and the required documentation for those transfers are listed below.

Note that transfer instructions are different for Mini-Bonds issued with certificates (2004, 2005, and 2006) and Mini-Bonds issued in Book-Entry form (2008 and later issues).

Transfers for certificate Mini-Bonds (issued in 2004, 2005, and 2006)

  1. Bond Power - Signatures MUST be Medallion Guaranteed
  2. Letter of Instruction
  3. IRS form W-9 completed for new owner
  4. Original certificate (for 2004, 2005, or 2006 issues)

 

  1. Bond Power - Signatures MUST be Medallion Guaranteed

  3. Certified copy of Death Certificate
  4. Certified copy of Court Appointment dated within 60 days
  5. Affidavit of Domicile (must be notarized)
  6. IRS form W-9 completed for new owner
  7. Original certificate (for 2004, 2005, or 2006 issues)

  2. Letter of Instruction
  3. Certified copy of Death Certificate

  1. Bond Power - Signatures MUST be Medallion Guaranteed
  2. Letter of Instruction
    a. Letter must include all trust information (trust title, date, trustees & address of new registration)
    b. Letter must include all bond information (CUSIP number, dollar amount, certificate number and maturity date)
  3. Certified copy of Death Certificate
  4. Copy of trust agreement naming successor trustee (MUST be Medallion guaranteed) or a certified copy of court order naming successor trustee
  5. IRS form W-9 completed for new owner
  6. Original certificate (for 2004, 2005, or 2006 issues)

Transfers involving Minors:

Please follow instructions for transferring bonds to another individual. In your letter of instruction, include the name of the custodian, the exact name of the minor and the state where the minor resides. (Note that only ONE custodian can be named per account.)

  1. Bond Power - Signatures MUST be Medallion Guaranteed (signed by the custodian)
  2. Certified copy of the minor's birth certificate (must include the original seal of the issuing bureau)
  3. Letter of Instruction indicating the name and address of the new registration
  4. IRS form W-9 certifying the social security number or tax identification number of the new registration
  5. Original certificate (for 2004, 2005, or 2006 issues)

 

  1. Bond Power - Signatures MUST be Medallion Guaranteed (signed by the former minor)
  2. Letter of Instruction
  3. Copy of a valid form of I.D. (e.g. driver's license, passport, etc) - Signatures MUST be Medallion Guaranteed or certified copy of the minors birth certificate (must include the original seal of the issuing bureau)
  4. IRS form W-9 certifying the social security number or tax identification number of the new registration
  5. Original certificate (for 2004, 2005, or 2006 issues)
  1. Bond Power - Signatures MUST be Medallion Guaranteed (signed by the custodian)
  2. Letter of Instruction (signed by custodian)
  3. IRS form W-9 completed for new owner
  4. Original certificate (for 2004, 2005, or 2006 issues)

 

Transfers for Book-Entry Mini-Bonds (for 2008 and later issues)

  1. Assignment Separate from Bond for Transfers - Signatures MUST be Medallion Guaranteed
  2. Letter of Instruction
  3. IRS form W-9 completed for new owner
  4. Bond confirmation (for 2008 and later issues) - if available
