Cheers to ten years: 2018 marks a decade of powering RBC Heritage with Green Power

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. – During its 50th anniversary year, the RBC Heritage Presented by Boeing is celebrating a decade of going green. It started with a promise made 10 years ago and since that time, every drive, chip and putt has been powered by 100 percent Green Power, delivered to RBC Heritage by Palmetto Electric Cooperative and generated by Santee Cooper.

RBC Heritage will purchase Santee Cooper Green Power from Palmetto Electric for the duration of the 2018 tournament, which plays April 9-15 at Harbour Town Golf Links on Hilton Head Island.

“It is hard to believe we were celebrating the 40th RBC Heritage when we committed to using Green Power 10 years ago,” said RBC Heritage President and Tournament Director Steve Wilmot. “That decision has led us to implement a number of other environmental programs during tournament week. We will continue to push toward our goal of being a leader for sustainability in golf.”

Santee Cooper generates Green Power from clean, renewable energy sources including landfill methane gas, solar power and wind power right here in South Carolina. In fact, in 2001 Santee Cooper became the first utility to generate Green Power and offer it for sale in South Carolina, and Palmetto Electric Cooperative signed on as one of the first cooperatives in the state to offer Green Power to its members.

“Along with Santee Cooper, Palmetto Electric has worked with tournament organizers to offset the power used at the event by purchasing an equivalent amount of certified Green Power, generated from renewable resources,” said Palmetto Electric President and CEO Berl Davis. “The support of the RBC Heritage and others here has made Palmetto Electric a pacesetter in Green Power sales in South Carolina. Thank you, RBC Heritage, and thanks to all Green Power supporters as well!”

Santee Cooper began generating renewable Green Power when it opened the Horry County Landfill Generating Station, which produces electricity from methane gas created by naturally decomposing garbage. As South Carolina’s leader in generating electricity from renewable resources, Santee Cooper has six landfill methane gas stations in commercial operation. It also has solar arrays generating power for the grid, 28 demonstration solar projects at middle schools around the state including two in partnership with Palmetto Electric, and a wind power project.

“For the past 10 years, the RBC Heritage Golf Tournament’s partnership with Green Power has been setting the standard of environmental stewardship for others to follow,” said Jim Brogdon, Santee Cooper interim president and CEO. “We applaud the Heritage and Palmetto Electric Cooperative on their continued commitment to Green Power and, as always, we look forward to working together in the years to come.”

Customers of Santee Cooper and the state’s electric cooperatives can purchase Green Power each month through their electric bills. For just two dimes a day, the purchase of Green Power builds a green energy future that has lasting impacts for our homes, cities and state. Green Power is Green-e Energy certified, and meets the environmental and consumer-protection standards set forth by the nonprofit Center for Resource Solutions. Learn more at
