Giving thanks and giving back

Santee Cooper - United Way Day of Caring

Santee Cooper employees volunteer for the 2015 Trident United Way Day of Caring.

Thanksgiving is a time to reflect on the blessings we have and the yuletide season also gives us the opportunity to reach out and help others.

At the risk of sounding like horn-tooting, the recently concluded fundraising effort for Trident United Way showed the generosity of Santee Cooper employees in the Moncks Corner area who again stepped up to make this year a record-setting effort, and contributing to make the Lowcountry a better place to live.

Our employees also contribute to United Way campaigns in Horry County, where we serve the municipalities of Myrtle Beach, North Myrtle Beach, Conway, Surfside Beach and Loris. Anderson County, where we have a generating station, also has our employees as part of their campaign.

The barrel of worthy causes will never be empty, of course, and one particular charitable organization cannot be everything to everybody. It is amazing to me the level of participation our employees exhibit year in and year out in organizations such as the American Red Cross, the American Heart Association and the American Cancer Society, to name a few.

Another example is the guardian ad litem program in Berkeley County, whereby children that have been removed from abusive or dangerous situations are provided presents on Christmas morning. These children and their requests are posted (anonymously) on the Angel Tree and employees remove the Angel Tree tags and fulfil their requests. Many children need clothes and other basic items, not frills, and there is a special feeling that comes from helping these youngsters.

Assisting those less fortunate is part of the tradition this time of year. As we go about our typical holiday rush and frenzy, consider a worthy cause that could benefit from your time or contribution. Happy holidays!
