Dancing with Chauncey
When I began my internship at Santee Cooper, I rarely imagined myself breaking out of my comfort zone and going on adventures that showcase everything that makes Santee Cooper unique, but I’ve done just that.
From riding on an airboat on the Santee Cooper Lakes with our environmental staff to creating videos and content to showcase the reality of a not for profit utility company, this internship has broadened my eyes to the multiple facets of my future in public relations and communications.
One of my favorite experiences I have had so far was when we had the opportunity to be part of a photo shoot with “Chauncey,” Coastal Carolina University’s Chanticleer mascot, a cousin of sorts to a gamecock. It was at Brooks Stadium in Conway and I was given the task of transforming myself into...a recycling bin.
I became the Horry County Solid Waste Authority’s “Bruce Reuse” for a day, and it was one of the most fascinating experiences I have had at any job or internship. It began by climbing into the tight leggings and ginormous cylindrical body, and then came the head with the impossibly large shoes, which made walking difficult.
I had very limited vision within the mesh-covered eyes and the lack of any peripheral vision made seeing outside of my round head very difficult, not to mention hot and sweaty after an hour or so. The best part, however, had to be the shoes, since I had nearly no mobility due to their size. Every step felt like I was attempting to walk on the moon.
It may sound crazy, but I loved every minute.
Overall, the energy of the entire shoot was amazing from my and Chauncey’s playful tackling and football moves to the jumping around and dancing. Everything at this photo shoot proved you can have a fun time, work and promote an incredible event like the Coastal Carolina Green Power game, set for Aug. 31, against Eastern Michigan University. A Green Power game means the game will be powered by 100 percent Santee Cooper Green Power from renewable resources.
I have always imagined what it feels like to be a mascot. It was incredibly fun getting to work with Santee Cooper and Coastal Carolina on something I would’ve never imagined possible at a public relations internship.
And here’s a quick plug: Beginning on Aug. 1, you can sign up to win tickets to CCU’s Zero-Waste Green Power Game. Just follow Santee Cooper on social media and watch for the contest posts. Good luck!
