Cross-Wassamassaw No. 2 230kV Line

Overview
Santee Cooper is constructing a new 230 kV circuit on existing right of way from the Cross area to the Wassamassaw area in Berkeley County, South Carolina. This project will provide additional transmission capacity to support the load growth, and it will also provide increased electric reliability to residents and businesses throughout South Carolina. Construction will involve removing and rebuilding approximately 3.7 miles of existing transmission line and installing new wire on 15 miles of existing line structures. The new transmission line will be constructed to the most up-to-date standards and codes that will provide more resilient to adverse weather conditions.
Project Description
Santee Cooper plans to construct this transmission line over a 1-year period, starting in mid-2026 and the line will be in service by June 1, 2027. Design and permitting are underway and should be concluded by the 2nd quarter of 2026. There are currently no planned service disruptions. Santee Cooper intends to send letters to homeowners along the route before project construction starts.
Right of Way/Land Acquisition
An approximately 2.3-mile section of existing right-of-way will need to be expanded to accommodate the 230kV line construction. Additionally, there may be right-of-way easement updates needed as some of the original easement language is dated and not up to current Santee Cooper standards. Studies are underway to determine what will be needed.
Timeline
2025-2026: Studies, Planning, and Engineering
2026: Receiving materials and final permitting
2026-2027: Construction Window. The project should be complete and in service by June 1, 2027.
Traffic
There may be some minor disruptions, at times, as the project crosses various roads. We will do everything we can to limit road closures, if needed. We will know more as the design and construction process unfolds.
