Fold Varnville-Indian Field 230kV Line into Edisto River 230kV Switchyard

Interactive Map

Overview

Santee Cooper is constructing two (2) new 230kV lines to connect the existing Varnville – Indian Field 230kV line to the Edisto River switchyard. This project will provide additional transmission capacity to the area, connect new generation to the power grid, and will provide increased electric reliability. The new transmission lines will be constructed to the most up-to-date standards and codes that will provide more resiliency to adverse weather conditions.

Project Description

Santee Cooper plans to design and construct these transmission lines over a 4-year period. This project started in July 2026 and will be in service by December 1, 2030. There are currently no planned service disruptions throughout this project duration.

Right of Way/Land Acquisition

Santee Cooper must obtain approximately 7 miles of new right of way to support this project. A route analysis is currently underway to identify transmission line routes and alternatives. These routes will be offered to the public for comments and feedback. Any landowners affected by any potential routes will be notified by mail and invited to attend a public meeting.

Timeline

2026 – Summer 2029: Studies, Engineering Design, Permitting

August 2029 – December 2030: Right of way clearing and line construction

Traffic

Traffic interruptions will be minimized as much as possible. There may be some short duration delays as crews work across roadways. Most of the line construction will be completed away from major roads.
