Overview
Santee Cooper intends to construct a new 230kV/115kV line from the Indian Field (St. George area) in Dorchester County to the Varnville substation in Hampton County.
Project Description
Santee Cooper plans to design and construct this transmission line over a 4-year period, from the fall of 2026 and should conclude by December 1, 2028. Design and permitting are underway and should concluded in 2026, and construction could begin as soon late 2026 to early 2027. There are currently no planned service disruptions. Santee Cooper intends to send letters to homeowners along the route before project construction starts.
Right of Way/Land Acquisition
There is a small portion of new ROW that is needed for the new 230kV line just outside of the St George substation. No other new right-of way is currently proposed. More will be known as design work progresses.
Timeline
2025-2026: Studies, Planning, and Engineering
2026: Receiving materials and final permitting
2026-2028: Construction Window. The project should be complete and in service by December 1, 2028.
Traffic
There may be some minor disruptions, at times, as the project crosses various roads. We will do everything we can to limit road closures, if needed. We will know more as the design and construction process unfolds.
