What Causes a Power Outage?

Ensuring reliability for our customers is a top priority, which is why we dedicate ourselves year-round to maintaining our infrastructure and leveraging advanced technologies to manage power outages efficiently. While we are prepared for the hurricane season from June 1 through the end of November, it is important to note that storms aren’t the sole culprits behind power disruption. And although we strive to maintain high reliability (we’re currently in the top 2% in the nation), outages do occur.

Here are common causes of outages within our service area:

  1. Storms: From sudden afternoon thunderstorms to powerful hurricanes and occasional ice storms, weather events can significantly impact our electrical system. Due to their unpredictable nature, pinpointing when and where an outage may occur can be challenging. Lightning strikes, strong winds and saturated ground associated with these storms are primary contributors to weather-related outages.
  2. Trees: Trees and other vegetation interacting with our equipment pose another major risk for outages. Working on a rotating schedule across our service areas, Santee Cooper performs tree trimming and vegetation control as part of our commitment to the environment and reliable electricity for our customers.
  3. Vehicle Accidents: Occasionally, vehicle collisions can damage electrical equipment, leading to prolonged outages. Our crews may need to wait for the accident scene to be cleared before commencing repairs. Additionally, when a vehicle strikes a utility pole, resetting the pole may be necessary.
  4. Wildlife: Despite our efforts to deter animals from our equipment, creatures like snakes, squirrels and small animals can still disrupt power by accessing restricted areas.
  5. Excavating: Surprisingly, digging activities, such as uprooting plants, can result in power outages more frequently than one might expect. These incidents can largely be prevented by contacting 811 before digging. For more information on safe digging practices, visit www.sc811.com.

As evidenced, these causes vary, with many stemming from natural factors. We urge everyone to prioritize safety around electricity. Should you experience an outage, please notify us promptly. To report an outage, call 888-769-7688 or visit our Storm Center. You can report streetlight outages here.
