Santee Cooper ranks among the top utilities nationwide, consistently exceeding our reliability goals. And we consistently have the lowest rates in the state compared with other large utilities. Over the past decade, we also have regularly ranked above the national average for customer service.
We achieve these ratings because we’re dedicated to providing you with the best service possible. On top of that, Santee Cooper’s vision is to be the leading resource for improving the lives of South Carolinians, and we take that seriously.
It all began when Santee Cooper was created in 1934 to provide electricity to rural parts of South Carolina. On April 7, 1934, Governor Blackwood signed a bill to create the South Carolina Public Service Authority, known as Santee Cooper, to construct two reservoirs (Lake Marion and Lake Moultrie) and a hydroelectric plant to serve the rural South Carolina population, which in turn would spark prosperity in the Depression-ravaged state.
The Santee Cooper project became the nation’s biggest land-clearing effort and the largest Federal Works Progress Administration project east of the Mississippi River during the New Deal. More than 12,500 workers toiled for 27 months, clearing swamps and woodlands, building dams and dikes, and constructing a powerhouse and navigation lock.
Along with hydro power, Santee Cooper now offers a modern mix of fuel sources, including natural gas, nuclear, solar, coal and methane gas. This helps us power more than 2 million South Carolinians direct-serve, municipal and wholesale customers. We also power industry and economic development and provide clean, safe water to around 200,0000 people living in areas of the Lowcountry.
The entire Santee Cooper team – from customer service representatives, line technicians and energy advisors (many of whom you see in person) to those behind the scenes including engineers, accountants and unit operators – is dedicated to our customers, our vision and our mission.
