Green Power is the Green Behind the Green
RBC Heritage, Palmetto Electric and Santee Cooper Celebrate 18 Years of Using Certified Renewable Energy for the Tournament
MONCKS CORNER, SC – For 18 years, the RBC Heritage Presented by Boeing has been driving a greener game by partnering with Palmetto Electric Cooperative and Santee Cooper to power every putt with renewable energy from wind, solar and landfill gas – all sourced right here in South Carolina. RBC Heritage uses Green Power, delivered by Palmetto Electric and generated by Santee Cooper, for its annual PGA Tour golf tournament. The tournament plays at Harbour Town Golf Links on Hilton Head Island from April 13 to April 19.
“Traditions play a significant role in who we are at Heritage Classic Foundation. For 18 years, we’ve worked side-by-side with Palmetto Electric and Santee Cooper to power the tournament with sustainable Green Power. It’s a tradition that leaves a legacy we’re proud of, and a tradition we’re honored to continue,” said RBC Heritage President and Tournament Director Steve Wilmot.
Santee Cooper generates Green Power from clean, renewable energy sources including landfill gas, solar power and a demonstration wind power project. Palmetto Electric Cooperative was one of the first cooperatives in the state to offer Green Power to its member owners, and it continues to promote Green Power today.
“The RBC Heritage represents more than golf. It’s a celebration of family, community and tradition,” said Palmetto Electric President and CEO Berl Davis. “For generations, people have returned to Harbour Town to create lasting memories, and we’re proud that our 18-year partnership helps support both that legacy and a commitment to Green Power across South Carolina.”
Santee Cooper became the first utility to generate green power and offer it for sale in South Carolina in 2001 when it opened the Horry County Landfill Generating Station, which produces electricity from gas created by naturally decomposing refuse. Santee Cooper has five landfill gas stations in commercial operation, a demonstration wind power project, solar arrays generating power for the grid, and 29 demonstration solar projects at middle schools around the state, including two in partnership with Palmetto Electric.
“We’re proud to partner with RBC Heritage and Palmetto Electric Cooperative to power the PGA golf tournament with sustainable, clean and locally sourced Green Power,” said Marty Watson, Senior Director of Commercial and Customer Service. “However, Green Power goes beyond the fairways in South Carolina. By distributing electricity generated by renewable resources to businesses, individual homes and major events, we’re helping protect our beautiful state while reducing our carbon footprint.”
Customers of the state’s electric cooperatives and Santee Cooper can purchase Green Power each month through their electric bills. Green Power is Green-e Energy certified and meets the environmental and consumer-protection standards set forth by the nonprofit Center for Resource Solutions. Learn more at www.green-e.org.
