Fall into Energy Savings

It’s hard to believe summer has passed, but there is something nice about milder days and cooler nights. And because there is less humidity, you also get to turn off that air conditioner and open the windows for some fresh air before the temperatures drop too much. There are many ways to save on your electric bill in the colder upcoming months, and it’s a good idea to get started now. Here are a few helpful tips to keep in mind.

Take care of those drafty areas

There may be several places in your home that are allowing the air from inside out and vice versa. When the outside temperature is too cold, this can cause an increase in your energy bill. Start by checking your windows and doors. If you don’t have weatherstripping, add some. If your weatherstripping needs replacing, do it now before the cold air arrives. After that, be sure to check around your electrical outlets, chimney and lighting fixtures, and seal those gaps.

Curtains are for more than aesthetics

You may be surprised at how much warmth the sun can provide just by opening your curtains. Let the sun shine through those south-facing windows during the day and close the curtains in the evening to hold in the heat. A well-insulated window can help keep you warm while saving you money.

Don’t forget to adjust your thermostat

The temperature setting in the summertime is quite a bit different than the cooler months. While setting your thermostat at 78 degrees in the summer makes sense for energy savings, we recommend 68 degrees in the winter. Of course, we all have different ideas of what’s comfortable, so set it as low as you can. But since every degree you increase your thermostat can increase your energy bill, don’t be reluctant to grab a sweater or a blanket to stay cozy while you save.

A smart thermostat is a great way to control the temperature of your home from your smart device, and we provide rebates if you’re ready to make the switch!

Be a fan of ceiling fans

Before I moved south, I had no idea how much of a difference ceiling fans can make. I also didn’t know that the direction in which they spin also makes a difference. When the temperatures drop, set your fan to spin clockwise to help push the warm air back down to you and circulate the air coming out of your vents. If you don’t have ceiling fans, consider installing one - they’re an inexpensive way to help keep you comfortable all year round.

Give your heating system a check-up

Autumn is a great time to have your heating system inspected. An HVAC professional can notice issues that you might not and will be able to recommend what you should do to ensure it keeps running – and does so efficiently. They’ll also check your indoor air filter. It’s important to use the air filter your duct work is designed to use, and a professional will know exactly which one to install.

If your system is older than 10 years, it might be time to replace it. If you’re considering a replacement, Santee Cooper can help offset some of the cost with rebates!
